IF: Plain (w/bonus coverage)

Before she had put herself together in the morning Jane always felt kind of plain...

Every year I do drawings for my kids' schools. This one I did for my daughter Sarah (yes, that's her in the corner with crazy glasses and underwear on her head). I'll detail the process later, but during the rendering I started throwing in IF folks whose work I enjoy...this made the composition a bit busy but such is life at times. Unfortunately I left some people out (actually a lot of people whose work I enjoy) because I couldn't find things in a short period of time that I felt would work okay in the scene.

Two less obvious ones are Amber, but she is super busy and never gets to participate in IF...although it would be great if she would...(aka Jane D'oh)...she's pretty awesome and has a keen wit about her which has always given me a good laugh...I couldn't incorporate the Monkey Peaches she grows in the can beside her microwave so I defaulted to the poi plant thing in the dog's flower box...I understand it is a felony to grow those things in Oregon so please keep her hydroponic lab under wraps.

I also started out to do this in color after planning on graphite, doing the linework and some of the painting, but knew it was going in the wrong direction and kept getting pulled to Detlef's site...who does pretty great graphite work. (check the barratuna site for links to these and others.)

So feel free to snoop around the pic and guess if you choose where some of the images come from...and I apologize for subtle issues due to the scanning and paneling of the work...

To ALL that contribute to IF, thanks for the inspiration and laughs!

I don't know about any of this art stuff...you drew this freehand right?
what is the IF folks stuff mean?
I think you make things more confusing just to make yourself feel better or something.

Make sure you stop by our house first tonite.

There are so mny great artistic elements in this. Some of the rendering is quite divine - the dog's hair and grass are really well done.

Two thumbs up! I'd give more than that but I only have two.

Excellent concept on Jane!! And the bottom drawing is great, possibly inspired by "Go Flying Turtle" "Tofu Squirrel" Pati's "Godo" and maybe "ValGal" for the doghouse? Really fun!

OMG, this pencil rendering is nothing short of phenomenal! I love this little dog, and the caterpillar! It's just breathtaking, really, I have great difficulty with this type of work, so I really appreciate it when someone else does it so well! nice!

Oh my Brine! This is the most incredible drawing I have seen in a while! I absolutely love every nook and cranny of this piece. I would hate to presume you did the house in my honor but I would be thrilled beyond belief if i did inspire that amazing specimen you created! I laughed at Hilljacks comment about the IF stuff and making things more complicated, good stuff. I'm guessing he's your friend or bro who doesn't know IF. I always wonder what people think when they click on to our sites accidently and see all this IF stuff and now i know... Also your plain submission is hilarious, I was just mentioning this very thing to my hubby about people in l.a. and you made it! Love your art!!! Incredible!

ValGal...First Hilljack...he, his wife, and dog (which is the best part of that group) live next to my dad in WV. So when I go visit (read that as go to eat free food and try to get my dad's wife to make sweet tea for me) we all usually do stuff. We went tubing this weekend and played UNO. Of course he got owned...it's usually down between his wife or my dad winning because they are both notorious cheats...she hides cards in her feedbag and my dad 'keeps score' so he always has the advantage...

Lolo got several of them, Steve's flying turtle, El's Tofu Squirrel, Pati's Godo, and of course ValGal, your housing! More items are still there unguessed of course.

I really like the idea of "plain Jane" you have. It looks like some women have more than just makeup to deal with.

Heee, the plain Jane is really funny!

I've been a having a hard time tearing myself away from your beautiful pencil drawing. Wow, that is fantastic! Very intricate, yet organized so well. You are quite the draftsman sir!

That doggie rawks. I bet you are good at stipple. 2nd one reminds me of Alex Murawski. A badass pro illustrator who teaches Illustration at UGA.

B- this is a great piece that is not at all too busy or confusing or anything of the sort.

Awesome pencil work.

I bow down to your attention to detail. I can only imagine how much graphite was left behind on your hand, wrist, fingers, etc. I love that you took inspiration from so many others to create this masterpiece! What a lucky school!

Thanks again for the visit. :-)

Thanks to you too Brian! I still need to link up your gallery at my blog. Anyhow, the top one is a hoot--reminds me of a gal I know who always says how she need to "put on her face" in the morning! The bottom one is a masterpiece. Anyhow, e-mail me about that dang print I'd like to purchase. My e-mail is goturtlepwr@yahoo.com. Thanks!

I am a moron. I think that project was too long and I am trying to forget it. I had completely forgotten about it. Great work B. This whole this is an awesome idea.

Hi Brine - your pencil drawing seems to have gotten the spotlight, but your entry for "plain" is clever, too!
And, yes, when the alphabet is complete I plan to make a composite in some format - wouldn't a quilt be cool?

Wow... your pencil work is absolutely stunning! I'll bet Sarah just loved it!
Such incredible detail!
As for Jane... well I guess we all get up feeling a little plain at times!
Wonderful!

Actually I felt a bit like BillZ with his little critic...the first words out of her mouth were'"You are going to color it aren't you..."

I spy Roz and Cabana, but alas.. no ants. How hard would it have been to put in a little teeny weeny ant? gosh.

Kind of hard to argue that Pebs is the best in the group. Not much competition.
Still don't know this IF stuff. Not that I care that much, just hate not knowing.
We need to figure out a weekend for snowshoe. Whatever happens, Amy and I are planning on skiing Friday too so we'll have to meet up friday evening. I'm sure we can work something out.

BF,
Do you have any ideas on what weekend is going to be good? I tried calling last night but phone was busy.
